Police have confirmed that a body found in Carrickfergus on Saturday, October 13 is that of missing Ballycarry man Stephen Buchanan.

The 56-year-old disappeared from his home on Friday, September 21. His remains were discovered in the upper reservoir on the Woodburn Road and a post-mortem examination was carried out to confirm the identity.

Detectives have now issued a poster appealing for witnesses to come forward with more information about the whereabouts of a black and white or orange and black Cannondale bicycle.

It is believed Mr Buchanan was riding a bicycle similar to this when he disappeared.

Information is also being sought regarding the deceased’s dark coloured cycling helmet and mobile phone, which is thought to be a dark silver coloured Motorola Gleam flip phone.

Officers believe Mr Buchanan was spotted riding a bicycle in the Woodburn reservoir area some time after his disappearance. At this time he was wearing a red cycling jacket and black three-quarter length cycling shorts.

Anyone who saw Mr Buchanan in this area since his disappearance or who has information regarding the whereabouts of his bicycle, helmet or phone is asked to contact detectives in Larne on 028 271052 or 0845 600 8000.
