A cancer charity has launched an appeal to the people of Larne to help raise more than £500,000 - by drinking coffee and eating cake.

Macmilan Cancer Support wants this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to be the biggest ever.

The charity is hoping many coffee mornings will take place across the Larne area, attracting hundreds of people and raising £10,000.

Acorss Northern Ireland, Macmillan hopes to raise more than £500,000 from the event to beat last year’s total.

The charity’s appeal for locals to sign up is being backed by the Mayor of Larne, Councillor Maureen Morrow. She said: “It is a fantastic community event for everyone to get involved in and I know the amount of people from Larne taking part is growing year-on-year.

“It would be good to make it even more successful this year. I am delighted to support the event and start the fundraising by making this donation,” she said.

Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Larne, Joanne Young said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.

“Last year we raised a record-breaking amount of money from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and we relaly hope we can repat that again this year.

“We’re asking peopel to once again invite their friends, relatives or workmates to come for coffee and help support Macmillan.

“It’s a fun and easy way to raise money to help Macmillan be there for people with cancer and their families when they need us most.”

The money raised from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is sued to fund services such as Macmillan nurse specialists, benefits and money advisors and to provide grants to families who are feeling the financial strain of a cancer diagnosis.

Fundraiser Joanne added: “Sadly the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year and that means Macmillan’s support for people living iwth cancer is in more demand than ever.

“Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will help us fund our vital services in the greater Larne area,” she said.

The official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is on September 27 but events can be held any time.
