Ulster-Scots festival to kick off Glenarm Twelfth
AN Ulster-Scots festival is beginning in Glenarm next Wednesday in the run-up to the Twelth celebrations being hosted in the village this year.
The picturesque coastal village will be the location for a variety of events, which the organisers, Sir Edward Carson True Blues Flute Band hope will be of interest to everyone.
This is the first time an event of this type has been staged in the village and has been generously sponsored by the Ulster-Scots Agency and Larne Borough Council.
The festival begins on Wednesday, July 1 when the annual commemoration of the Battle of the Somme parade at 8pm, followed by a lecture in Glenarn Orange Hall at 8.45pm on the battle by Dr David Hume.
Everyone is welcome to come along to find out what those involved experienced. Admission 2.00.
Friday, July 3 is a night not to be missed so bring the family and enjoy the craic! Lined up is an Ulster Scots concert at 8.00 pm in Glenarm Orange Hall, featuring Tom Cameron, Amanda Robinson, Elaine Wood, Kenny Mitchell Accordion Group, Fiddlesticks Orchestra, Flute Band and Highland Dance Group.
Compere for the evening is the renowned Rab C otherwise known as Stephen Nesbitt. Commencing at 8pm admission is 2 for under 16’s, 3 for OAP’s and 5 for others.
Thursday, July 9 brings an opportunity to learn a little about local heritage with a lecture by Dr J Mattison on Sir Edward Carson, an outstanding exhibition of WW1 memorabilia from Mr J Pattison and a talk on the history and origins of the Scottish, Ulster and Union flags. The event will also be taking place in Glenarm Orange Hall, admission 2.
On Saturday, July 11 there will be a community fun day in the field at Straidkilly Road, featuring bouncy castle, face painters, Aughafattan Accordion Band, flute band, Lambeg drumming demonstrations and workshopa dn pipe and drum demonstration and workshops. Admission free.
On Monday, July 13 the Braid District annual district demonstration will be hosted by Glenarm LOL 1121 commencing at 12 noon.
A warm invitation is extended to all to go along to the Straidkilly Road field, if only for the view, where there will be plenty of family entertainment including the Ulster Scots Group, face painters and bouncy castle.
Refreshments in the field include spit-roasted pig, burgers and homemade ice-cream.
