SUN SHINES ON LARNE'S AWARD-WINNING BEACHES

AS the borough sizzled in this week's high temperatures, Larne's three favourite beaches kept their cool by picking up a trio of prestigious seaside awards.

It was announced yesterday (Wednesday) that the sun had definitely shone on Brown's Bay, Ballygally and Carnlough which were all awarded rural seaside awards by Tidy Northern Ireland.

The awards recognise beaches within reasonable access of the urban community with developed facilities and providing varied recreational opportunities. Water quality at these beaches have to meet mandatory standards.

Philip Thompson, director of environmental services for Larne Council said it was great news for the borough.

"Larne Council is delighted that these beaches have been recognised and that is a reflection of the hard work of council staff in partnership with Tidy NI and local community groups.

"This is undoubtedly another boost for the borough which can also boast the scenic Antrim Coast Road, Carnfunnock Country Park and an environment of which three-quarters has been desginated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

"As a borough we should be proud of and respect our environment," he added.

Dr Ian Humphreys, chief executive of Tidy NI, said it was great to be able to provide people with a wide range of high quality beaches, especially at a time when they were perhaps considering spending their holidays close to home.

"The beach operators have worked hard to ensure our shorelines is in great condition, and I would call on the public to do their bit as well.

"By using the bins provided and keeping litter off the beach, we can all enjoy the summer months relaxing on beaches that any exotic destination would be proud of," Mr Humphreys said.
