PIPS' prayers are answered at last

SUICIDE awareness charity PIPS Larne has been offered premises from which volunteers aim to run a drop-in centre.

Larne Football Club answered the group's impassioned plea, reported exclusively in the Larne Times back in June, for a permanent base in which to operate their services, which include a dedicated help line, counselling and education programmes.

The offer of a former store at Inver Park is the answer to the PIPS group's prayers, although it remains to be seen how the football club's landlord, Larne Borough Council – which is seeking vacant possession of the football ground – will view the move.

Larne FC chairman Archie Smyth said this week the club is granting PIPS free use of the premises at 5 Inver Road, adding that he saw no reason why the club should inform the council of the arrangement.

“Anyone who rings us in need of help, we ring them back straight away,” said Carlee, “but it’s a very expensive way for us to operate.”

Encouraged by latest developments, the group is planning a number of initiatives, including PIPS Lifeguard Training – a suicide prevention programme aimed at educating members of the public and especially the likes of taxi drivers, bar and restaurant staff – in how to deal with people who show signs of being suicidal.

And two committee members are to study for degrees that will enable them to work proactively in suicide prevention.

Lorraine emphasised the need for PIPS in Larne. She explained: “We see people who are in the very depths of despair, whether they are talking of suicide, or self-harm, or people who have been bereaved by suicide.

“There are problems with addiction, depression and loneliness. People who feel they have no one else to turn to because of a lack of family support.”
