New sewage plant for Mounthill

editorial image

PLANNERS are set to approve replacement plant at NI Water’s Mounthill wastewater treatment works.

The application, due to go before Larne Borough Council’s public services committee next week for consultation, has been provisionally marked for approval by Planning NI.

The proposal is for replacement rotating biological contactor (RBC) plant to be constructed within existing works, to meet future requirements. The application indicates that no new buildings or accesses are proposed and that none of the structures will exceed 15 metres in height.

RBC is a type of secondary sewage treatment process. Primary treatment removes grit and other solids through a screening process, followed by a period of settlement. RBC exposes the wastewater to a biological medium in order to remove pollutants before discharge of the treated wastewater to the environment.
