First chapter in library scheme
LARNE Borough Council is keen to make a start on much-needed improvements at Carnlough library, despite a lack of funding for the project.
The local authority owns the building in which the library is housed. Last year, Libraries NI earmarked the branch for closure because it lacks facilities required to make it sustainable, but after sustained local lobbying agreed to a one-year reprieve to enable improvements to be carried out.
The council has applied for a £50,000 grant from the North East Rural Development Partnership (RDP) and has set aside match-funding.
Work is also ongoing with the Causeway Coast and Glens Landscape Partnership scheme to source Heritage Lottery money.
In the meantime, the council is seeking to appoint a team to work up three different designs and cost them.
Once appointed, the design team would prepare a brief (the first of five stages).
They would be paid for the work subject to the council receiving funding and proceeding to detailed design, construction and completion.
