First aid skills are put to the test

FIRST Islandmagee Scout Troop has won the annual South East Antrim first aid competition.
The competition took place in the Second Islandmagee Presbyterian Church Hall.
Runners-up were First Cloughfern Scout Troop.
The Scouts had to know how to deal with a number of incidents such as severe bleeding or coping with a patient suspected of having a stroke.
They also had to answer a set of written first aid problems in a timed test.
The scenarios and written test were set by Vic Wooton, Scout leader, of Fifth Carrickfergus Scout Troop.
Mr Wooton also acted as assessor and was assisted by Elma Elser, Squirrel leader, of 1st Islandmagee and Chris Young, leader of Fifth Carrickfergus Scout Troop.
Anne Nicholson, Scout assistant district commissioner, said that the type of incident the Scouts were expected to cope with was pitched at the level four Staged Activity Badge and the first aid requirements of the Challenge Badges – Expedition and Outdoor Adventure.
