Drinks cartons can now go in blue bins
HOUSEHOLDERS in Larne can now dispose of beverage cartons as part of their blue bin collection.
The Borough Council’s waste collection was extended to include these items at the start of March.
Director of Environmental Services, Philip Thompson said: “Local residents have always responded well to the different recycling schemes we’ve implemented, but we’ve still got some tough targets to meet, both as a Council and as a region.
“This new service will help us to increase the amount of household waste recycled from this area, reduce disposal costs and harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and enable us to provide a better service and better value for local residents.”
Fay Dashper, Recycling Operations Manager at ACE UK, added: “The high-quality wood fibres found in beverage cartons are flexible and strong, and can be recycled up to six times, making them a valuable raw material for new paper products.
“It’s therefore fantastic news that Larne Borough Council is taking a lead by adding cartons to the list of materials collected for kerbside recycling.
“We are committed to increasing carton recycling in the UK and our work with councils in Northern Ireland takes us a step closer to achieving that.”
The doorstep collection will reduce the requirement for beverage carton recycling banks across the borough and leave three carton recycling banks at the Redlands, Glenarm and Larne South recycling centres.”
