Don't tempt burglars with festive gifts

OPPORTUNIST thieves may be lying in wait for Larne shoppers who drop their guard during the hustle and bustle of Christmas.

PSNI Inspector Noel Rogan warned this week that the public should not leave shopping in their cars as criminals could well take advantage of the festive season to break into vehicles to steal gifts and other valuables.

"I would urge people not to return back to parked vehicles, leave their Christmas shopping inside and then go back around the shops for more.

"These thieves know that people are buying more items at this time of year and they will try to take advantage of this when people are busier," he said.

Insp Rogan said that there had been a few incidents recently, particularly in the area around the Moyle hospital, where thieves had stolen items from parked cars.

The warning came as members of Larne District Policing Partnership discussed how the public should be made more aware of thieves operating over the Christmas period.

Alderman Jack McKee, speaking at the latest public DPP meeting, asked how householders could protect themselves in their own home over the festive season.

Insp Rogan said that the awful reality of Christmas presents being stolen from homes was one that had happened to some people.

"While people like to see presents under the tree, it really is asking for trouble to leave them on show for burglars. They will look for the signs of a house being unoccupied - if someone is a work, at a place of worship or wherever.

"It is like leaving goods in a parked vehicle - the criminals will take advantage of the situation," he warned.
