Council urges: consult on tidal energy scheme

editorial image

LARNE Borough Council has asked the companies behind a proposal to install up to 100 tidal energy turbines on the sea bed off Torr Head to consult with local environmental organisations, sea anglers and the fishing industry.

The local authority also told consultants acting for Board Gais Energy and OpenHydro Technology Ltd that there should be detailed flora and fauna surveys, coupled with a wildlife review, with particular emphasis on the repercussions for seabirds, as well as whales, dolphins and porpoises which are increasingly being seen along the Antrim Coast.

It is thought the alternative energy scheme could generate electricity for up to 75,000 homes.
