Council taking a shine to solar bins

IT'S already acknowledged as one of the sunniest towns in Northern Ireland and now Larne is well placed to make the most of it - with solar-powered rubbish bins.

"Smart bins" unveiled yesterday (Wednesday) by the borough council automatically compact waste so they hold up to eight times as much as a conventional alternative.

But the 19 BigBelly bins now in place along the coast are even smarter than that because, when full, each bin alerts council workers by email or text that it needs to be emptied.
