Capacity crowd for DVD launch

THE Cairncastle Ulster-Scots group launched its latest DVD at a packed Halfway House Hotel in Ballygally last Wednesday.

The new DVD, which was quickly snapped up by hundreds of eager guests, features highlights from the group's 2009 Ulster-Scots Festival.

The launch event was part of the group's monthly soiree and saw entertainment from The Grousebeaters and a number of musicians from Donegal.

Cairncastle Ulster-Scots spokesman, Bobby Acheson said the event was held at the Highways Hotel, rather than at the group's usual venue of Cairncastle Orange Hall, to accommodate the large number of guests.

He added: "The function room was packed to the doors for the launch of our new festival DVD.

"People from all over the Province came along. We even had a Queen's University student from Kentucky and a Presbyterian minister all the way from Australia.

"The evening was everything we could have hoped for and more and we were all well entertained."

Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Nelson McCausland was also in attendance and described the event as "a great night".

He added: "One of the songs performed during the evening was about travelling from Ulster across the narrow sea to Scotland and I commented on the fact that standing in Cairncastle, Ballygally or Ballycarry, and looking across to Scotland, it is indeed so very near."

The minister also commended the group for all the good work it had carried out in the area.

Next year is the tenth anniversary of the Cairncastle Ulster-Scots festival and Mr Acheson revealed that another DVD would be produced to commemorate the occasion.

"Next year's DVD will feature highlights from the festival's tenth anniversary and perhaps even footage from our first festival," he added.

"Our new DVD has sold out, but anyone who wants to order copies can do so by contacting me on 07774401935."
