Brave student Clare is simply first class

A LARNE student who had a lifesaving operation as a child is celebrating this week after graduating from Queen's with first class honours.

Clare McFaul, 22, of Magee Park, had a stroke at the age of 11 due to irregular blood vessels in her spinal cord, and underwent groundbreaking surgery at John Redcliff Hospital in Oxford to alleviate the condition.

Her father Roy said: "When Clare went in for the operation, we were told that there was a 15 per cent chance it could leave her quadriplegic. However, we were also informed that if she did not have the surgery there was a 100 per cent chance that she would suffer another stroke."
