ROADS Service is to investigate a permanent means of protecting a section of the Coast Road from landslides.

The agency recently had a contractor install concrete blocks at a spot between Carnlough and Glenarm where there has been considerable slippage, but Sinn Fein councillor James McKeown said this week he had been informed that the measure is temporary.

“I have asked Roads Service to consider something that will be a bit more in keeping with the character of the area,” said the Coast Road representative. “I accept that something had to be done in a hurry, and Roads Service agreed with me that the barrier is unsightly and they will look at a more permanent and hopefully more attractive solution.”

“I have suggested that they could put up a gabion wall filled with local stone, which would not look out of place,” he added.

Cllr McKeown said Roads Service officials have agreed to investigate the possibility of widening a footpath between the south end of the village and the children’s play area.

“The path is only 2ft 6ins wide in places. It’s on a bend on the Coast Road and it’s only a matter of time until there’s an accident because people have to step out on to the road to get past one another,” he explained. “It’s an accident waiting to happen” claimed the councillor.
