All systems go for daredevil Norman
A LARNE man's quest to become the first person to fly around the world in a gyrocopter received rapturous support from local councillors this week.
As reported in last week's Larne Times, local entrepreneur Norman Surplus is set to embark on a daring four-month expedition, which will cover 27,000 miles and take in 26 different countries.
Norman believes his expedition will prove that the gyrocopter – best known for its appearance in a James Bond film – can be used as a serious form of flight.
And, as a cancer survivor, Norman hopes his incredible journey will help raise funds and awareness for bowel cancer across the globe.
He had hoped to start his ambitious journey yesterday (Wednesday), but was delayed due to improvements being carried out to his aircraft.
Norman now intends to set off around 11am on Monday, March 22, and has been given the full backing of Larne council to use Sandy Bay as a take-off point.
The council also granted Norman permission to use the area as a landing point when he returns on July 12.
