Paramilitaries have issued death threats against four Larne men, according to Sinn Fein MLA Oliver McMullan.
The east Antrim representative, who sparked outrage within the unionist community earlier this month by alleging that loyalist paramilitaries had warned local bar owners not to serve Catholics, said the men have been told to either “leave town or face death”.
Mr McMullan added that he had reported the matter to the PSNI and claimed they had “confirmed the threat was genuine and serious”.
When approached by the Larne Times for comment, a police spokesperson said: “We do not discuss the security of any individual.
“However, if we receive information that a person’s life may be at risk, we will inform them accordingly.
“We never ignore anything which may put an individual at risk.”
Mr McMullan has now called for the alleged threats to be “lifted immediately” and urged unionist politicians to take action.
He added: “This latest incident shows that it is now time for these politicians to take their head out of the sand and stand up for the majority of people of Larne, who are opposed to these bully boys.”
