'˜Viable' device made safe in Carnlough

Army technical officers dealt with what they described as a 'viable device' on the outskirts of Carnlough this morning.

A number of homes were evacuated after the object was discovered on the doorstep of a house. Police re-opened roads this afternoon afternoon.

Sinn Fein Assembly member Oliver McMullan denounced those responsible for the device, which he said “brought nothing but disruption to the local community”.

“There is no room for these type of attacks in our society and they must end immediately,” he added.

Police said the device was removed for forensic examination.

Chief Inspector Stephen McCauley appealed to anyone who has any information about the incident to contact Police at Larne on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 688 12/07/16. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
