Steensons jewellers has licence to thrill for Game of Thrones fans

The fantasy epic, which will soon begin airing its sixth season, has been a smash-hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

And, just as with the previous seasons, showmakers HBO filmed much of the upcoming season in locations across Northern Ireland.

Ever since the first season, Steensons jewellers in Glenarm has been working with HBO to create props for costumes worn by the characters who inhabit the medieval world of Westeros.

The goldsmiths –which recently relocated to a larger workshop at Seaview Hall in the village – has lovingly crafted brooches, crowns, necklaces and an array of other items to help bringing an added layer of authenticity to the beloved show.

And now, its ties to the series has resulted in Steensons being granted a licence by HBO, allowing the business to sell its own line of Game of Thrones-inspired merchandise to the public.

Brona Spencer, who is a director of Steensons along with her husband Dan, told the Times: “The licence allows us to sell items based on the pieces we have already made for the show, such as Joffrey’s crown, Margaery’s bridal necklace and wedding tiara, dragon brooches worn by Daenerys and several others.

“We make all the items to our usual high standard using metals such as silver, brass, copper, and even gold plating some pieces.”

A number of pieces crafted by Steensons have played a crucial role in some of the show’s key plot developments.

The Glenarm business has also completed a number of items which are due to feature in the show’s upcoming season – however, they are staying tight-lipped about what exactly those items are.

Brona added: “It is fantastic to be a part of such a successful and widely-loved show.

“Fans come from all over the world come to Northern Ireland and go on bus tours to see the various locations were the show was shot.

“Who knows, maybe someday Steensons will be included on the tour?

“Even when the show finishes, it will leave a legacy behind in Northern Ireland and we will always be a part of that.

“Our involvement with the show has been a hugely positive experience for us and we are looking forward to seeing what the future holds.”
