The machine, which administers an energy electric shock to the heart to those in cardiac arrest, was paid for by the local community’s fundraising activities.

Police are appealing for information following the theft in the Harbour Road area, which it is believed occurred between 7am and 10.30am on Friday October 21.

Sergeant Michelle O’Neill said: “This is a vital piece of equipment which could mean the difference between life and death for someone. I would appeal to anyone who knows of the whereabouts of this defibrillator to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 339 21/10/16. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

“This is an absolute disgrace,” said one woman.

“Stealing a medical piece of equipment which can potentially save an individual’s life. Please do the right thing own up and return it.”

Sinn Fein MLA Oliver McMullan also appealed for the return of the equipment.

“Leave it somewhere people can find it, that’s all we’re looking for,” he said. “Have a conscience, something could happen at any time and it would be needed, it could be your relative who benefits.”
