Larne Writer’s Group member Gill Magill’s new book ‘Septic’ tells the tale of a family living on the West Pennine Moors who are forced to contend with the after-effects of war when the father returns home from conflict.

The devastating consequences of the condition, which create a “septic” relationship in the family, form the backdrop to a crime mystery as a body is discovered in a septic tank.

“The father was serving in Iraq and when he returns he develops PTSD and starts knocking his family around, so his wife divorces him and moves away,” Gill revealed.

“His son develops a violent hatred of his father’s behaviour, and then finds his father has moved near them again. Then a body is found in a different location.”

Gill says that the “dark story” is the product of her “vivid imagination.”

“The beauty of the area contrasts with the awful deeds that take place there,” she continued.

“This is a page-turner and I’m trying to keep people guessing.”

Gill also hopes that the book will help highlight PTSD.

“This book deals with the effects of PTSD on a family and how it comes back to haunt them,” she stated. “I don’t have personal experience of PTSD but it’s a current problem so hopefully the book will help highlight it.”

Septic by MG Magill is available at the Book Nook and Apsley’s in Larne, Ballygally Spar and the Bank House in Whitehead. Also available on Amazon or Kindle.
