Golfers on par for charity in Whitehead

A group of four friends from the local area are set to take on a gruelling sports challenge, all for a worthy cause next month.

The team, who are all members of Whitehead Golf Club, will be playing four rounds of golf, all on the one day at the Whitehead course.

The challenge on Monday, June 20, will be in aid of Macmillan Cancer.

The team, made up of Glenn Baxter and Nicholas McClay from Larne, along with Alan Gibb and Stephen McNeice from Carrickfergus, were inspired to support the charity, following the death of Glenn’s father last year.

Speaking to the Times, Glenn said: “I always wanted to do something to give something back to the nurses at Macmillan and help other people.

“This is a great charity and personally I am doing this in memory of my father who passed away last year after a short battle with cancer. I am also doing it for the people who are fighting this disease at present.”

Glenn has been a member at Whitehead for the past two years. Before joining the club at McCraes Brae, he was a member of Cairndhu Golf Club for 24 years.

Glenn continued: “I’ve been playing golf for 26 years, while the other guys have all played for around 10 years each. We’ve never played any endurance things like this before, so it will be a challenge.

“We are expecting to start the challenge at 5.30am and aim to be completed at around 9pm, so it will be tough going.”

Between now and taking on the challenge, the men will be playing at least three rounds of golf every week to improve their fitness.

Glenn first had the idea to compete in the challenge after seeing a post about it on social media in February.

He raised the idea with his friends and they were also keen to take part.

Glenn added: “It will only be the four of us taking part in the challenge at Whitehead, although other players across the UK will also be doing it on the same day.

“We’ve had really good feedback from the public so far, with friends and family members donating sponsorship to us.

“We haven’t really set a target, but I would be happy if we could raise £500 each.”
