Father and son from Larne gear up for 1,000-mile lap of Ireland

The pair, who operate Lusty’s Centra on Old Glenarm Road, will set off from their shop and travel a gruelling 1,000 miles around the coastline of Ireland, climbing an incredible 55,500ft in 10 days.

The retail duo aim to raise funds for local two local causes, Action Cancer and Roddensvale School.

Their journey will take them to the most southerly tip of Ireland at Mizen Head, and along the Wild Atlantic Way to the most northerly point at Malin Head.

Richard said: “In July 2009 I was a typical middle aged couch potato leading an unhealthy lifestyle and avoiding worthwhile exercise. Weighing 18 stone it was of little surprise that I was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes.

“At 48-years-old I went through a sea-change and turned my life in a new direction. A new diet and fitness regime in the gym resulted in me losing six stone in five months and eight inches off my waistline. To enjoy this new found fitness I bought a bike and haven’t looked back.”

Son Raymond added: “I know that this cycle will be the most difficult thing my dad and I have ever undertaken. The physical and mental challenge will immense.

“This is my first endurance adventure and I am so proud to be setting out on the challenge with my dad. He has trained incredibly hard and we are prepared for the journey.”

Cyclists are invited to join them on Saturday, August 6 in Castlerock for the final leg of their challenge along the Causeway Coastal Route and Antrim Coast Road.
