Richard Barnes and his wife Marie were thrilled to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the June event, which was hosted by the former Secretary of State Theresa Villiers.

The garden party honoured the many voluntary groups working with young people in Northern Ireland.

Marie took the opportunity to snap a selfie, which showed the Duchess of Cambridge mingling with the crowd in the background.

“They were both fantastic, warm and friendly” said Marie.

“It was a very special day and we were both privileged to have been there, representing Larne Music Festival Committee,” agreed Richard.

Larne Music Festival Association was founded in 1925 by a group of musicians but then ended in the mid-1950s.

In September 1999, local musician and choir master John Dooris set up a new committee and re-instated the festival.

The event aims to “encourage and unearth the vast musical talent found in Larne, its environs, and the East Antrim area.”

It is open to schools, choirs, soloists and musicians.

The patron of the event is Lady Aurora, Viscountess Dunluce.
