Decrease in crime in Mid and East Antrim, say police

Crime in Mid and East Antrim has fallen by 2.3 percent over the past year, according to annual crime statistics published by PSNI.

From April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016, crime decreased by 131 incidents, from 5696 incidents to 5565, compared to the same period in the previous year.

In addition, the crime outcome rate rose from 28.2 percent to 29.7 percent.

Outcomes include charge/summons, cautions (adult and juvenile), discretionary disposals, penalty notices for disorder, offences taken into consideration, and indictable-only offences where no action was taken against the offender - for example if they died before proceedings or PPS did not prosecute.

Mid and East Antrim District Commander, Superintendent Ryan Henderson said: “The rise in our outcome rate means that 48 more crimes have been cleared during 2015/16 and that more people have received closure after being the victim of crime.

“We are pleased that we have driven down crime in Mid and East Antrim, particularly at a time when overall crime in the province has increased. However, we will not become complacent. The statistics tell us that we still have work to do in making our district safe.

“We will now use this statistical information to help inform our operational strategy for the year ahead. I would like to ask the community for their continued support. Information and productive partnerships will help us to continue to prevent, detect and deter crime throughout the district.”
