Six people paid off in a month

SIX confirmed redundancies were reported in the Larne area during December, taking the number of people seeking jobs to 796, representing 5.7 per cent of the working-age population.

Government statistics also show there are 31 more Jobseekers Allowance claimants locally than was the case a year ago - an increase of 4.1 per cent.

Larne’s unemployment rate remains lower than the Northern Ireland average 6.8 per cent recorded in the period September-November, 2011.

The data reveals only nine confirmed redundancies in the borough during 2011 compared with 42 in Ballymena, 15 in Carrickfergus and 102 in Newtownabbey. None was confirmed in Moyle over the 12 months.
