Police are investigating an incident of criminal damage in the Herbert Avenue area of Larne in the early hours of this morning.

Around 1.10am a number of windows of a car parked in the area were smashed. Damage was also caused to the front window and graffiti painted on the front door and wall of a house.

The PSNI has confirmed the incident is being treated as a hate crime.

Condemning the attack, East Antrim DUP MLA Gordon Lyons described it as “despicable and unprovoked”.

“Nobody should have racist graffiti daubed on the walls of their home and the windows of their car and home smashed. It is a completely appalling act.

“There can be no doubt that this attack had a sole purpose to intimidate innocent people in our community, however this type of behaviour has no place here.

“I understand this incident is being investigated as a hate crime and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the PSNI.”

Inspector Heather Scott said: “This incident is being investigated as a hate crime and I am appealing for anyone with any information to contact police in Larne on 101 quoting reference 55 04/08/16 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
