ANTI-social behaviour at Larne's war memorial park must be stamped out, a local councillor has urged.
Ald Jack McKee asked police to act on complaints about younger people and adults causing a nuisance.

He also said respect should be shown for the park, which is dedicated to the memories of those who fell in the service of their country.

For many years the public park at Inver has been misused as a drinking den, but now Ald McKee wants police to make it safe for visitors and residents alike.

"People in the area are telling me that they've complained to the police about drinking, shouting and unruly behaviour generally, but they say nothing has been done about it," he said.

It was unacceptable that residents were being harassed - often into the early hours of the morning - and he believed police had a duty to keep the peace and ensure that the ethos of park is maintained.

"After all, it's a garden of remembrance and should be respected as such," said Ald McKee.

"Young people and even adults hanging around, drinking and causing a nuisance can be seen from a number of vantage points", added the TUV representative, who suggested it should not be difficult to keep things in check.

"People are fed up with it. They say they have complained, but nothing has ever come of it."

Larne police said last week they are committed to the Province-wide Operation Snapper which is aimed at curbing under-age drinking. They have said they will target areas where illegal drinking is known to take place.
