Car plunged onto beach near Glenarm

Two Larne women had a miraculous escape after their car crashed onto the beach at Coast Road near Glenarm in the spring of 1965.

The black Volkswagen which was being driven by a sailor from Warrenpoint plunged over the cliff near the “Madman’s Window”.

The car crashed through rocks onto the beach 50 ft below. The Volkswagen was said to have been “written off”.

All four occupants managed to escape from wreckage virtually unhurt. They were taken to hospital where they were treated for lacerations and shock.

The driver and his friend were crew members on board the MV Spaniel which had docked in Belfast. They had been on a sightseeing trip to the Antrim Coast when the accident occurred.

A Glenarm resident said: “How they survived beats me. It was a miraculous escape from certain death.”
